Beginner 1

【CEFR A1】

Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

【CEFR A2】

Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

Low Intermediate (Conversation)

【CEFR B1】

Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

Intermediate

【CEFR B2】

Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Advanced

【CEFR C1】

Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

【CEFR C2】

Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.

JOI Grammar and JLPT classes

At JOI, we offer specialized grammar classes for Japanese learners. Understanding grammar is a fundamental element of language learning. Our grammar classes provide a systematic approach to learning Japanese grammar, with tailored curricula for all levels, from beginners to advanced learners.

Our experienced instructors offer clear explanations and practical exercises, helping learners solidify their grammar knowledge and improve their ability to apply it in daily conversations and business situations. Additionally, these classes are ideal for those aiming to pass the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test). Beginner 2 Grammar (incl. JLPT N4)

This FlexLesson level  focuses on Japanese grammar at the beginner 2 level,including the grammar forms covered on the JLPT N4 test.

You'll also improve your Kanji and vocabulary skills through this course. This level is recommended for all beginner 2 students, even if you do not plan to take the JLPT.

Of course with all classes at JOI, you get to speak and use the grammar in situational role plays and conversations.

We recommend you take this level and the conversation-focused Beginner 2 level at the same time. You can freely mix and match the FlexLesson class types as your schedule allows.

★JLPT N4 Kanji and Vocabulary

If you can read a few kanji but haven't written many, or if you want to learn JLPT N4 kanji and vocabulary, let's start studying kanji together!

In this class, we will practice by writing blank strokes, using an animation of the stroke order.
Once you have a rough idea of the stroke order, you can practice by actually writing them on paper.
Words using each kanji will also be introduced, so you can study vocabulary as well.

No textbook is required for the class.
Once your reservation is confirmed, we will send you a "practice sheet" to use in class.
If possible, please print out the sheet and join the class. If printing is difficult, please prepare your own notebook.

This course teaches 700 of the 1000 essential Kanji needed for the JLPT N2 level test (minus the 300 basic Kanji from the N5 and N4 levels). In each lesson, we focus on 10 - 15 Kanji characters.
When you learn Japanese, learning Kanji is equivalent to learning vocabulary. We expand your vocabulary and language network based on learning each character, and by paying attention to collocation we increase your word power.
Anyone can study this class, if you have completed the beginner level in Japanese learning. Deepen your knowledge of Kanji and enjoy learning new characters. Come and join this class and see for yourself!

Tensaku Essay Correction (FlexLessons service)

Tensaku is our writing review and correction service. A variety of tensaku topics are published every month at several skill levels. You can choose one of the topics and practice writing your Japanese in an essay.

How to use the Tensaku service

  1. You choose a topic, write your Japanese text,and submit it to us via the reservation system.
  2. A professional JOI Japanese teacher will review and correct your submitted text.
  3. You'll receive a corrected document, detailing suggestions for wording, grammar, and usage changes.

Writing is an effective add-on to the Japanese language instruction presented in classes at JOI.
By bringing together your knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, kana and kanji, the challenge of writing in Japanese puts your language skill to the test and vastly improves Japanese learning.
