絵手紙とは手紙の一種で、葉書に花や野菜など身近なものを短い文章を添えて書き、送る相手に気持ちを伝えるものです。

色鉛筆や筆、絵の具などを使って少し時間をかけて書く世界で一枚の手紙。去年の震災で被災された方に、日本全国からたくさんの絵手紙が届いたそうです。手紙を受け取った方の中には、絵手紙に励まされ、がんばることが出来た人もたくさんいて、送ってくれた人を訪ねたり、文通をしたりして交流が続いているそうです。 ニュースでそれを知って、あらためて手紙の温かみを感じました。

Hand-drawn cards

An 'etegami' is a type of letter, its a postcard with flowers or vegetables and other familiar things are drawn with a short message attached, that communicates a certain feeling to receiver.

It involves using colored pencils, writing brush or paint in taking a little time to create a letter of this style. Last year, apparently many 'etegami' were sent from all over the country to the victims of the earthquake disaster. There were many people among those that received the letters that were encouraged by them and felt able to keep on trying, and some people even visited the people who sent them, exchanged letters with them and continue to stay in touch with them. I watched this on the news and was able to reaffirm the warmth given out by letters anew.

I am busy everyday, but I thought that I could take a little time to write something. Letters created easily by computer, and shop-bought cards have become mainstream, which might make it all the more meaningful now to take another look at handwritten 'etegami' which have their very own style.
