今週は蚕を紹介します。

　蚕とはクワの葉を食べて育ち、絹の糸の原料を作ることができる昆虫です。 5月の後半は、小さな蚕がクワの葉を食べ始める頃です。

　日本は100年位前に、まだ発展していなかった頃、この蚕を大量に育て、絹を作っていました。 世界中に絹を輸出し、外貨を得るためにです。 この時、日本は世界一の絹生産国になり、得た外貨で近代化をすることができました。

　現在はもうあまり蚕は育てていませんが、今でも蚕を大切にしています。 皇居では、昔から蚕を育てていて、皇居の式で使う着物にその絹を使っています。

蚕（かいこ）

　今週は蚕（かいこ）を紹介（しょうかい）します。

　蚕（かいこ）とはクワの葉（は）を食べて育（そだ）ち、絹（きぬ）の糸の原料（げんりょう）を作ることができる昆虫（こんちゅう）です。 5月の後半（こうはん）は、小さな蚕がクワの葉を食べ始める頃です。

　日本は100年位前に、まだ発展（はってん）していなかった頃、この蚕を大量（たいりょう）に育て、絹を作っていました。 世界中に絹を輸出（ゆしゅつ）し、外貨（がいか）を得（え）るためにです。 この時、日本は世界一の絹生産国（せいさんこく）になり、得た外貨で近代化（きんだいか）をすることができました。

　現在はもうあまり蚕は育てていませんが、今でも蚕を大切にしています。 皇居（こうきょ）では、昔（むかし）から蚕を育てていて、皇居の式（しき）で使う着物（きもの）にその絹を使っています。

Silkworms in Japan

This week I will introduce you to silkworms.

Silkworms are insects that grow by eating mulberry leaves and can produce silk thread. In the second half of May, small silkworms begin to feed on mulberry leaves.
