In the warm, humid days and nights during summer in Japan, the traditional thing to wear is a Yukata.
The Yukata was originally designed to be a bathrobe, so the Kanji reflects this origin (浴衣).

Later the wear became popular to wear during the summer months.
The material is light and unlined cotton.

In the old days, the material was colored white or indigo.
The indigo dye also worked well as an insect repellant.

Men and women would often these light summer outfits - but recently more girls than boys can be seen wearing them.
When festivals and firework shows are held in summer, you can find many girls wearing these pretty clothes and there are many colors in the modern designs.

There are some interesting rules for wearing Yukata.
1. Always have the left side should be covering the right. The opposite is for corpses!
2. You should have the bow of the obi at the back or off center at the front.
